Jean Minahan

I work hard for people; I always have.  From growing up with 7 younger siblings on Iowa farm, to 30 years in social work, to serving on my neighborhood association board and serving as president.  It's what I do, and I'm ready to work hard for you.

“I’ve lived in this Ward for 40 years. I’ve worked here, raised my family here, and participated in making our community better for this generation and the next.”

–Jean Minahan

Jean Minahan, Candidate

Jean retired from a 29 year career as a Social Worker for the State of Iowa.  Over that time, she worked with and served the wide spectrum of citizens in this community, and she will make sure that the voices of all citizens are represented at the council.

Issues:

Advocate for Seniors

Jean is an AARP member and strongly believes that our seniors deserve a high quality of life, including affordable housing, and the option to stay in their own homes.

Working Together

When we work together, we win.

Neighborhood Associations, Non-profit Organizations, Polk County, the City of Des Moines and local businesses have their own priorities but by working together, we all win. Jean was a part of the steering committee of Thrivent Builds Neighborhoods, a million dollar initiative focused on community building.  The project brought together public and private groups resulting in the building of 36 new homes and updates or repairs to 250 more.  Collaboration Works!

Healthy Living

Children need a safe place to play.  Adults need green spaces to enjoy the outdoors. Jean believes that all new housing developments should provide playgrounds and green space to meet the needs of children. Exercise and good health are important to the quality of life of citizens.  Jean advocates for parks, trails and outdoor spaces for health and recreation.

Diversity

Jean has lived in a culturally diverse neighborhood for over forty years.  This gives her a unique opportunity to represent minority views on the council.

As an involved, active woman, Jean can articulate the perspective of female voters.

“I’ve lived in this Ward for 40 years. I’ve worked here, raised my family here, and participated in making our community better for this generation and the next.”
